Schelling’s Bronze Sculpture draws a link between classical and bronze age sculpture and contemporary art. His new work includes compositions of spheres, planets, bowls, blades, tools, wheels and sitting men. Common objects take on a mystical association as they emerge from bronze wall plaques and are strung along a vertical axis or around a ring. These bronzes are reminiscent of classical Greek bronzes and Hindu sculpture.

“I am making sculptures based on common objects now,” says Schelling, “that simply because they are ubiquitous have become archetypes, both personal andcultural. My interest is in how they retain the most elemental forms of material culture. A blade or bead or egg can hold our simplest shared knowledge and wisdom of the world. Sculpture offers insights into our material world, and how it can be a container for our heritage and wisdom.
