Caroline Bagenal will exhibit sculptures and works on paper in The Order of Things, her first solo show at Boston Sculptors Gallery.

The Order of Things is a sculptural installation that explores the repetition and variation of simple forms. Bagenal has created hundreds of small sculptures made from recycled containers, milk cartons, tins and lids which she has hand painted ultramarine blue. Though small in scale these simple everyday objects reference much larger architectural forms like temples and tombs. Some of the sculptures have brightly painted interiors that contain small objects and function as reliquaries. In Scroll she has assembled numerous strips of cloth collected from old clothes and fabric from her travels. In these works and others Bagenal uses materials from her everyday life to address larger issues of personal and cultural history.

Bagenal’s work is informed by her interest in art history. She is an Assistant Professor at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, where she currently teaches the Senior Fine Art Seminar. In the summer of 2008, she team taught The Art and Architecture of the Etruscans in Italy, and for the past three years she has taken a group of students to study the art and architecture of Mali in West Africa. Bagenal was born in Scotland and came to the USA to attend The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, where she received an MFA in Painting and an MA in Modern Art History, Theory and Criticism.

Bagenal’s work will be shown concurrently with the work of Robert Schelling.
