This series of sculpture includes large and small sandblasted wood pieces cast into bronze. Many of them are formed by numerous, erratic saw cuts; they were repeatedly sandblasted to accentuate the grain, wood texture, and deep kerfs. The transformation from wood to bronze adds permanence and weight, and the work is enhanced by the remarkably beautiful surface textures and colors unique to bronze. These pieces were inspired by the naturally etched volcanic mountains of Hawaii as well as Kahili, the tall, delicate feathered standards that served to identify the ruling Hawaiian class during ceremonies.
