Kim Bernard received a BFA from Parsons School of Design, NYC in 1987 and resides in Southern Maine. Exhibiting her encaustic and sculptural work nationally, she is recent recipient of the National Prize Show Sculpture Award and a 2007 finalist for the Piscataqua Artists Advancement Grant. Bernard teaches at the Maine College of Art. Bernard is the founding member of New England Wax, a professional exhibiting association of encaustic artists, and has offered numerous presentations on encaustic and sculpture, acted as an invited juror and guest lecturer. Working both sculpturally and with encaustic, Bernard exhibits her work nationally, implementing contrasting materials such as wax, lead and ceramic, evoking a sense of sacred space. Intrigued with the phenomena that objects and places have the power to elicit an air of spirituality her works are simultaneously archaic and contemporary. About her work, Bernard says, “Working with the infinitely forgiving medium of wax, I layer, burn, scrape, embed and transfer.Often implementing contrasting materials, like encaustic and lead, I am intrigued by the rapport, whether it contrasts, harmonizes, opposes or compliments.”
